The Backbone of Public Health: Celebrating Community Health Centers

Every August, National Health Center Week (NHCW) brings well-deserved attention to the more than 1,300 Community Health Center (CHC) organizations that care for approximately 31 million people across the United States. According to the most recent data, one in eight children in the US receives care at a CHC.

In 2025, we’ll celebrate August 3–9 under the theme “America’s Health Centers: Celebrating Past, Present, and Future.”

The Rich History of CHCs

In 1965, President Johnson’s Office of Economic Opportunity launched the nation’s first community health centers as a small demonstration project. Rooted in both the civil rights movement and the War on Poverty, these early health centers embarked on a bold mission: to utilize the healthcare system as a tool to transform the health and lives of the communities they served.

The Financial Impact of CHCs

According to available 2023 data, CHCs in the US delivered significant value to the healthcare system, saving the Medicaid program an estimated $38.6 billion annually. CHCs primarily generate these savings by focusing on cost-effective primary and preventive care, which reduces the need for more expensive services, such as emergency department visits and hospitalizations.

These findings align with decades of research demonstrating that CHCs deliver high-quality care at a lower cost, resulting in better patient outcomes and reduced overall healthcare spending.

Key financial highlights from 2023:

  • Overall System Savings: Although comprehensive 2023 data on total system savings are not yet available, prior economic analyses estimate annual savings to the US health system at approximately $24 billion.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: The Congressional Budget Office has noted that CHCs achieve their impact through highly cost-effective care delivery models.
  • Impact on Medicaid Spending: CHCs served 18% of all Medicaid beneficiaries in 2023 but accounted for only 2.3% of total Medicaid spending, highlighting their efficiency.
  • Lower Spending Per Patient: On average, spending per Medicaid patient at CHCs is 24% lower and per Medicare patient is 30% lower compared to other outpatient care settings.

While CHCs continue to save the healthcare system billions of dollars annually, they face ongoing financial pressures, including the expiration of federal funding and rising operational costs. Despite these challenges, CHCs remain a vital, cost-effective cornerstone of the US healthcare safety net.

People Are the Heart of CHCs

While the financial impact of CHCs, like CommuniHealth Services, is significant, their true value lies in the people they serve and the communities they support. At the heart of every CHC are the patients who rely on accessible, compassionate care and the dedicated providers, staff, and community members who bring each center’s mission to life — serving all, regardless of background or ability to pay.

CHCs are built on relationships and sustained by trust. They go beyond treating illness — listening deeply, responding thoughtfully, and adapting to the specific needs of the communities they serve. Rooted in the neighborhoods they support, CHCs uphold dignity, equity, and respect, ensuring every individual has a trusted place to receive high-quality care.

With a holistic approach to health, CHCs address not only medical needs but also the social factors — like housing, nutrition, and transportation — that shape overall well-being. Governed by community boards and guided by local voices, they reflect the priorities of the people they serve. This community-driven model makes CHCs not only accessible and affordable but also personal, culturally informed, and essential to advancing health equity nationwide.

Ways You Can Celebrate Health Center Week 2025

When we support our health centers, we support healthier, stronger communities — today and for generations to come:

  1. Tour Your Local CHC: Many centers host open houses, health fairs, or vaccination drives.
  2. Share Your Story: Post on social media using #NHCW25 to spotlight how your health center has helped you or a loved one.
  3. Thank the Team: Drop off handwritten notes, snacks, or simple thank-you cards to front desk staff, nurses, and providers.
  4. Advocate: Reach out to local, state, and federal officials. Remind them that stable funding keeps communities healthy and saves taxpayer dollars.
  5. Volunteer or Donate: From reading programs in pediatric waiting rooms to helping with food pantry drives, there’s a role for everyone.

Looking Ahead: 60 Years and Counting

As we commemorate six decades of service, challenges remain — workforce shortages, rising demand, and policy uncertainties. Yet CHCs continue to innovate, expanding telehealth services, integrating behavioral health, and pursuing value-based payment models to maintain high quality and low costs.
